Two things will
happen as fall starts to fade away along with the beautiful trees: DST will
leave us and its time to sign up for the Turkey Trot. For the morning runners,
you will soon have daylight an hour sooner and for the evening runners, you lose
that hour of daylight. For all of us, we get an extra hour of sleep on Saturday
Night. Just so you don't look foolish waiting around for your buddies to show up
for the run on Sunday Morning, move your clock back one hour before retiring for
the night this Saturday (Oct. 31). For the Daylight Savings Time Challenged
People (there's more than you think)----if you go to bed at 10:00 pm, simply
move your timepiece back to 9:00.
Registration for the 34th Annual Turkey Trot
will begin at First Gear on Monday, Nov. 2. The Turkey Trot is one of the races
established by the Wichita Running Club back in the era of Brent Wooten and
Steve Ryan. Back then we thought that we had a unique name for our race, now you
can find a dozen Turkey Trots in every state. The concept to have a quality long
distance race before the holidays has stayed the same. The race has grown and
prospered over the years and Brent and Steve can be proud of that.
No races in
the immediate area this weekend. There is a 5k Trail & Treat in Carey Park,
Hutchinson at 9:00 am Saturday and a 2 Mile Run in Arkansas City on Saturday.
Next Saturday, Nov. 7, is El Dorado's PIE 5k Run in Richard Porter Park at 8:00
am. Also, the first of the First Gear XC Series will be held at the Cessna
Activity Center at 9:00 am.
I would expect a good group at Health Strategies at
7:00 am on Saturday Morning. Many will opt for the 7 miler to the firehouse and
back. All are welcome to join the group in the parking lot at 551 N. Hillside.
The Sunday Derby Group will meet at 7:30 am (CST) at the corner of Woodlawn
& Madison in downtown Derby for a 10 miler. All are welcome to join Ken and
his group, always an interesting course and water at the 5 mile.
The Wed Nite
Group will meet at First Gear at 6:00 pm for a run through downtown and the
river paths. All are welcome to join the group---some are fast and some not so
fast.
The Thu Nite Group will move to its winter location on Nov.5 (tonight's
location is the same as previous weeks). The winter location is the North
Chisholm Creek Park which is on the west side of Woodlawn just north of K-96.
All are welcome to join us for a 5 miler on the K-96 Path. One note for the
future, Derby Running Club's Annual Christmas Party and Circuit Awards will be
held on Friday, Dec. 18.
Have some good runs. For you evening runners not used
to running in the dark, wear your reflective clothing, blinking lights,
headlights and such so that others can see you and you can see
them.
