Weak and Strong Runs---Jan Out With Snow? Ed.
    28 - JANUARY 2010
As I write this, there is a prediction of heavy snow later today and tomorrow so remember that group runs will be altered by severe weather such as snow. If you choose to run outside during severe weather like I do, remember that if you're running in the same area as vehicles that they won't be able to stop quickly for you and that there could be an accident that would result in a wayward vehicle encroaching upon your running space. Also, remember that snow can hide bumps, dips, cracks, etc. so you have to watch your footing closely and slow down from your usual pace.

No races in the area for this last weekend of January.

A couple of no-frills, no awards type of races for Feb. Next Sunday, Feb. 7, is the Super Bowl Sunday Run at Wichita's Linwood Park. It is a 4 mile flat, fast, certified course. You do get a knit hat and an accurate time for your participation. The race starts at 2:00 pm and will save you from the endless drival that leads up to the actual Super Bowl Football Game and the fresh air and exercise will counteract the high calorie fat snacks that you know that you will eat later. Oh, yes, at the end of the race you get a tissue to blow your nose. What other race gives you that???

In contrast, one week later on Sunday, Feb. 14, is Derby's Not for Wimps 10 mile/10k at Market & Woodlawn in Derby. It is 10 miles (or 10k if you can't hack the whole 10 miles) of hills, sand, dirt, mud, weeds, bushes, etc. that is uncertified, which is okay because by the end of the event you won't care anyway. You will get a time and place which won't mean anything to anybody but yourself. You will have the satisfaction of running the toughest race in the area plus you get a No Wimp Beanie and you will be able to refuel with Lamar's Donuts and homemade cookies from the Club's fabulous baker girls. I'll see you at the finish line of the races.

If we have decent roads, I would expect to see a good group at Health Strategies at 7:00 am on Saturday. Everybody is welcome to join the group that meets in the parking lot at 551 N. Hillside.

The Sunday Derby Group will meet at 7:30 am at the corner of Woodlawn & Madison  in downtown Derby for a 10 miler. Everybody is welcome, an interesting course and water at the 5 mile mark awaits you.

The Wed Nite Group meets at First Gear at 6:00 pm for a run through the downtown area and the river paths. All are welcome, most run 5-9 miles.

The Thu Nite Group meets at 5:45 pm at the North Chisholm Creek Park for a 5 miler on the K-96 Path. You are welcome to join the group, the park is located just north of Woodlawn & K-96 on the west side of Woodlawn.

Have some good runs, be careful out there.
