Wow, two major
snowstorms since I wrote the last edition! Sure makes it hard to get around and
run in a safe location. On the east side, the K-96 Path from Woodlawn west has
been plowed and I believe that the paths in Sedgwick County Park are always
plowed. The Super Bowl Sunday Run was in between the two snowstorms and had a
good participation of just less than 200 runners. Talk about timing, 30 seconds
after the race started, the snow started falling; but, didn't create any
problems for the race.
The weather should be decent for the Not for Wimps 10
mile/10k Event in Derby this Sunday, Feb. 14. Registration starts at 12:30 pm at
the Derby Recreation Center in Derby, Market & Woodlawn (take Madison west
from Rock Road or east from K-15 to Woodlawn and south to Market). A nice race
hat is included in the registration fee. Race starts at 1:30 on Market, just
west of Woodlawn. The course isn't certified since it changes every year and
nobody cares anyway if its a little short or long. As stated before, this event
is not for the timid. Those who finish are classified as one tough runner (or
mudder, depending upon the condition of the course). In any case, wear old shoes
that won't make you cry if they're ruined. Bottled water, homemade cookies, and
donuts will be waiting when you finish.
No other races in the area for a few
weeks.
Brooks Day at First Gear is on Saturday, Feb. 20. All Brooks Shoes and
Apparel will be 25% off.
I would expect a good group at Health Strategies at
7:00 am on Saturday. You are welcome to join the group in the parking lot at 551
N. Hillside.
The Sunday Derby Group will meet at the corner of Woodlawn &
Madison at 7:30 am for a 10 miler. Most of the regular group will be missing due
to the above NFW Event and a couple of marathons.
The Wed Nite Group will meet
at First Gear at 6:00 pm for a run through the downtown area and the river
paths. All are welcome to join the group.
The Thu Nite Group will meet at 5:45
pm at the North Chisholm Creek Park for a 5 miler on the K-96 Path. All are
welcome, the park is north of K-96 and Woodlawn on the west side of Woodlawn.
