To those of you
who are relatively new to Kansas, this is pretty much typical spring
weather in
Kansas. From the "its later than you think or I should have started
training for
the race last month files." Brochures are out for the Johnston's Wichita
Half
Marathon which is a month from today on Sunday, April 25. The race is
mostly the
same as in the past except that it is a spring race now instead of a
fall race.
One major change is that they will use Bibtag chip timing (race number
&
chip are combined). Probably the most convenient of all of the chip
systems. As
discussed previously, it is on the same day as the Oklahoma City
Marathon/Half
Marathon so you would have to make a choice if you have run both of
these events
in the past. The women who have always ran the half and the Emma Creek
Classic
5k (held the day before the half this year on April 24) will have to
decide the
amount of energy to devote to each one if they decide to do them both on
the
same weekend. It is nice to have choices, right?
Exactly one
week later on
Sunday, May 2, is Derby's High 5 5k & 1 Mile----still enough time to
train
for this one; but, its time to get moving and the River Run 10k is just 6
days
later.
No races in the area this weekend. Next week is one of
our top spring
races, The Easter SunRun 10k and 2 Mile. If you're just rolling out of
hibernation, its probably better to do the 2 mile. If you've endured the
Kansas
Winter fairly well, hit the 10k. Its got a good course and good food
afterwards
and a good chance to check your fitness level early.
I've heard
from a number of
you that have had problems getting on the Run Wichita Website and I've
had
problems, also. It appears to be working just fine now so give it
another try.
Check the details of these and other races at www.runwichita.org. The Half has
its own
website, also, www.wichitahalfmarathon.com.
I
would expect a good group at Health Strategies at 7:00 am on Saturday.
Some are
doing marathon training, others are getting ready for some of the
shorter spring
races. Panera afterwards for a treat and conversation.
The
Sunday Derby Group
will meet at 7:30 am at the corner of Woodlawn & Madison in downtown
Derby
for a 10 miler. All are welcome to join Ken and his group, water at the 5
mile
mark.
The First Gear Racing Team will meet on Wed. at 6:30 pm
for their weekly
track workout. All team members are encouraged to come out and join the
workout.
The Thu Nite Group will meet at 5:45 pm at the Chisholm Creek
Park/Nature Center
for a 5 miler on the K-96 Path. All are welcome, enter the park from the
east
side of Oliver between K-96 and 29th St. (directly east of the new
Rainbows
Center) and follow the park road to the big parking lot.
