The annual Bank
of America River Run 10k and 2 Mile is this Saturday, May 8. It is said to be
the largest race in Kansas (Note: all of the big races in Kansas City are on the
Missouri side) and is a good race. Just about everybody that's a runner and many
who aren't participate in this race every year. I've seen participants on
crutches, arms in a sling, walking with assistance and various other things
because they didn't want to miss their yearly participation in the River Run. A
few details, the races start on Douglas, just west of Broadway in downtown
Wichita. The big problem is parking. There is plenty of parking downtown, the
only question is how far you will have park from the race. The answer is the
same as all other big races---the earlier you arrive, the closer you can park.
Some prefer to park close to the starting line, others close to the finish line.
In any case, allow plenty of time to park, warm up, and all of the other
necessary things because they won't hold up the race for you. My old standard is
to arrive an hour before race time. Be sure to get in position for your pace
(note: this is not a chip timed race) because the crowd is very
tight for the first mile, the turn from Douglas onto Mosley is very tight so
plan ahead. Good luck, maybe I'll see you on the switchback. The River Run is
the only race in the area for this week and next.
The Senior Run for us old
geezers is on the 26th and the next race for all ages of runners is the East
Meets West 5k on June 5. Unfortunately, that is the same day as the Hospital
Hill Run in Kansas City (MO) which is very popular with Wichita Runners.
In view
of my comments above, I do not expect any runners to show up at Health
Strategies on Saturday Morning so if you need a partner find one before you go.
