An update from
last week---the trivia question was a complete bust. No one attempted to answer
it. On Saturday, I had a conversation with some of the Ponytails and none of
them came close to the answer. Okay, let's make it easy---the Ponytails were
originally formed to run in what famous Relay? Answers by non-Ponytails only.
For the Ponytails (or anyone else that knows the answer)----who were the four
original Ponytails and what was the first year that they participated in said
Relay?
Over the years, there has been much discussion about interval training
and the benefits or the lack thereof from the training. For starters, let's get
our terminology straight. Interval is the easy pace in between the fast (speed)
work. The length and speed of the interval is just as important (or more so)
than the speed work itself. Most runners do not understand this concept.
Somehow, they feel that a walk (complete recovery) is just as beneficial as a
jog (partial recovery). If you want to improve your speed and endurance, you
will have to tax your body with limited recovery time. More later.
Only one race
in the area this weekend, the Hammer It 5k in Park City on Saturday.
I might add
a note for those who are new readers: I do not report on Adventure Races,
Triathlons, Ultras, etc. since these speciality races require so much training
and prep time that participants know about all of these long before I do anyway.
Next week on Saturday, July 3, is the Chisholm Trail 5k in Newton and on Sunday,
July 4, is the 29th Annual Firecracker 4 Mile & 1 Mile in Derby's High Park.
It will feature chip timing on a brand new certified course for the 4 mile a
cycle measured 1 mile course, which is new, also. You can register at First Gear
or the Derby Recreation Center or online registration at active.com, www.active.com/running/derby-ks/derby-firecracker-2010.
If you can catch me at my car, I can register you out of the trunk.
I would
expect another good group at Health Strategies at 7:00 am on Saturday Morning.
All are welcome to join the group in the parking lot at 551 N. Hillside. There
are various distances; but, a lot do the traditional 7 miler to the fire station
and back.
The Sunday Derby Group will meet at 7:30 am at the corner of Madison
& Woodlawn in downtown Derby for a 10 miler. All are welcome to join Ken and
his group.
The First Gear Racing Team will meet on Wed at 6:30 pm for their
track workout at the Friends U. Track.
The Thu NIte Group will meet at 5:45 pm
at the Chisholm Creek Park/Nature Center for a 5 miler on the K-96 Path. All are
welcome to join the group, enter the park from the east side of Oliver between
K-96 and 29th St. and follow the park road to the big parking lot.
