Be careful out there, heat indexes will be near dangerous
levels the next few days. Have plenty of liquids available (water not Gatorade
is best) and run with a buddy so that you can watch out for each other.
Holly's
daughter reports that she is out of ICU and recovering; but, requests no
vistors for the time being so that she had plenty of time to rest on her road
to recovery. Just keep pulling for her as she goes through this very difficult
time. We all know how difficult it is to miss even one scheduled day of running
so feel for her as has to miss many of those.
This Saturday is Asics Day at
First Gear, 25% off Asics shoes and gear. I'm calling this Saturday, June 27, "the Saturday Morning Special." Run with the group at Health Strategies at 7:00
am, have some refreshment and conversation at Panera, pick up some goodies at
the downtown farm and art market, shop at First Gear, attend the sidewalk sale
at Bradley Fair, and eat lunch. A long nap in the afternoon would seem about
right. While at First Gear, sign up for July 4th's Firecracker Run
and get one of those great shirts before they're all gone. No races in the area
this weekend.
July 11 has a couple of area races with a lot of past history.
Wellington's wHeatrun 5k and one mile.
This is a cross country course (off-road) which will be nice not to run on
pavement in this heat. The 5k starts at 7:30 am and the one mile follows an
hour later. Boston Marathoner and elite runner John Anders is the race
director.
The other race on July 11 is the Run to Cheney 5k and one mile. This
was a popular race in the 80s and 90s and then disappeared for 16 years; but,
is "new" again for this year. The 5k begins at 7:30 am and is followed by the
one mile at 8:30. More info about both of these races on the Run Wichita
Website, www.runwichita.org.
I would
expect a good group at Health Strategies on Saturday Morning at 7:00 am. A
couple of Pink Ponytails are planning a 12 miler if someone wants to keep up
with them, others will do the traditional 7 miler to the firehouse and back
with Panera afterwards. All are welcome to join the group in the parking lot
north of the building, 551 N. Hillside.
The Sunday Derby Group will meet at the
corner of Woodlawn & Madison in downtown Derby at 7:30 am for a ten miler.
All are welcome to join the group, an ever-changing course and water at the
5-mile mark awaits you.
The First Gear Racing Team will meet on Wed at 6:30 pm
for their weekly track workout at the Friends U. Track. We've only had about
12-14 each week since this heat has started so more participation from team
members is welcome and needed.
The Thu Night Group will meet at the Chisholm
Creek Park/Nature Center at 5:45 pm for a 5 miler on the K-96 Path. All are
welcome, enter the park from the east side of Oliver between K-96 and 29th
St. and follow the park road to the big parking lot. Plenty of cold water and
conversation afterwards.
Keep cool and hydrated out there, you can catch me in
the shade.
