One area race this week --- the Mulvane Old Settlers Road Race 4 Mile and 1 Mile. The 1 Mile starts at 7:30 am on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the High School Football Field in Mulvane. The 4 Mile follows at 8:00. This is a well run no-frills race with no extras; but, has a fast course with just a few inclines in it. A good 4 mile to get ready for the fall races.
Next week on Sat., Aug. 22 is the Oxford Lions Club Fun Run 4 Mile and 2 Mile in Oxford. A friendly, no-frills race with a terrible course which is half dirt; however, it is one of my favorite races for some reason. Both races start at 7:30 am near the high school gym and football field.
Another race on the 22nd is the Ovarian Cancer Coalition 5k Run at Sedgwick County Park. The 5k gets underway at 7:00 am and is followed by a fun walk. I'm not familiar with this event; but, I assume that it's an event staged for charity.
On the 29th is the Black Arts Festival 5k at Grove Park. The race starts at 8:00 am. It's a good fast course and is a well run race.
Also, on the 29th is the Sand Creek 2 Mile Run in Newton. The race gets underway at 8:30 am on the East Side of Fisher Field on West 1st Street in Newton.
The Wichita Half Marathon is Sept. 20 and its past time to start training for this one.
Don's Race was a lot of fun last Saturday. The number of runners was small; but, we hope that this unique race will be continued.
I would expect a decent crowd at Health Strategies on Saturday Morning at 7:00 am minus the racers at Mulvane (above). I and some of the Ponytails will be there for the traditional 7 miles to the firehouse and back. Others will be doing longer distances for marathon training. All are welcome to join the group which meets in the parking lot north of the main building at 551 N. Hillside.
The Sunday Derby Group will meet at the corner of Madison and Woodlawn in Downtown Derby at 7:30 am for a ten miler. All are welcome to join Ken and his group. Always an interesting course and water at the 5 mile mark.
The First Gear Racing Team continues to meet on Wednesday at 6:30 pm at the Friends U. Track. All team members are encouraged to join the others for support and good training.
The Thu Nite Group meets at the Chisholm Creek Park/Nature Center at 5:45 pm for a 5 mile on the K-96 Path. All are welcome to join us. Enter the park from the east side of Oliver between K-96 and 29th St. (directly across from the Rainbows United Complex) and follow the park road to the main parking lot. Cold water and cool conversation afterwards.
