It looks like the
last weekend in August will be cool with some decent running weather and that
can mean only one thing----September will be hot, right? A couple of area races
to close out August.
The Black Arts Festival 5k is at 8:00 am on Saturday (29th)
at Grove Park. This is a good race with a nice flat and fast course with plenty
of food after the race, I understand. Grove Park is easy to find----just hop on
the K-96 Expressway, exit on Hillside and head south, you'll see it on the west
side of the street after a couple of minutes (the Rescue Mission is across the
street).
The Sand Creek 2 Mile Run is at Fisher Field (west 1st St.) in Newton
at 8:30 am this Saturday, also. I'm not familiar with this race; but, it appears
to be a low key race if you're needing a short race at this stage of your
training.
Labor Day Weekend has the Dream Big 5k on Sat., Sept. 5. It has been
on the east side for the past two years; but, will be held on the west side at
New Market Square (21st and Maize) this year. The 5k is at 8:00 am and a one
mile is at 8:50. This is another fast and flat course, if you're looking for a
good time. They say that this is the first race ever held at New Market Square.
Haysville's Running into Fall 5k is on Sept. 12 at 8:00 am. Race starts at
Seneca and Fager in Haysville.
The ever popular Wichita Half Marathon is on
Sunday, Sept. 20. It features a new course this year to eliminate the congestion
of the out and back course of prior years. Its not flat; but, should be a very
interesting and good course. All the extras that you've come to expect in past
years will be back.
A bunch of races coming in Oct. including the annual Heart
of Wichita Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 18.
The group at Health Strategies at 7:00
am on Saturday will be diminished by those racing this Saturday and most
Saturdays for the rest of the year; but, you're welcome to join those that are
left in the parking lot north of the main building at 551 N. Hillside.
The
Sunday Derby Group will meet at the corner of Woodlawn & Madison in downtown
Derby at 7:30 am for a ten miler. A good course and water at the 5 mile are
always features of this group run. Some are doing marathon training distances,
if interested, let me know.
The First Gear Racing Team will continue to meet on
Wed at 6:30 pm at the Friends U. Track for a few more times this year.
Hopefully, the cooler weather will make it easier to do the workouts.
The Thu
Nite Group will meet at 5:45 pm at the Chisholm Creek Park/Nature Center for a 5
miler along the K-96 Path. You are welcome to join the group, enter the park
from the east side of Oliver between 29th St. and K-96 (directly across from the
new Rainbows United Facility) and follow the park road to the main parking lot.
Conversation and cold water after the run.
Have some good
runs.
