The biggest news
of the week won't take place for over a year. No, its not the Kellogg Freeway
(that's years, if ever, away). It was announced earlier this week that the
Annual Wichita Marathon will change its location and course. Next year's edition
will start and finish at the new Intrust Arena and the course will assume a more
metropolitan feel to it. There will be many more changes announced in the next
year as they fall into place.
Many of you have asked about chip timing over the
past few months. It will be coming to our races in the near future, perhaps, by
the end of the year.
As you may have noted from news releases, our Mayor Brewer,
is getting on board with running and physical fitness and that can only be good
for all of us. Our City Manager, Bob Layton, is a dedicated runner and
marathoner and that helps, also. You can never have too many people in your
camp. A good turnout for the Mayor's 5k on Oct. 18 would help our image as a
community of runners even though the spotlight will be on the mayor. More to
come in the coming weeks.
The annual Race for the Cure is this Saturday at Towne
East at 8:00 am.
The Colwich Harvest Run 5k and 1 mile in Colwich is this
Saturday, also. The BYOK 5k in Valley Center at 9:00 am rounds out the trio of
races for this Saturday (26th).
The popular Rosstoberfest 5k and 1 mile in
College Hill is next Saturday, Oct. 3. This is a good race with a festive
atmosphere to it.
The Loop the Lake 4 Mile in Augusta is on the 3rd, also, as
well as, Whitewater's Fall Festival Run 5k.
Rose Hill's Run for the Roses is on
the 10th. A mile run starts at 7:30 am and the 5k follows. One of your better
no-frills races. The Maize Fall Festival Fun Run 2 mile is on the 10th, also.
The Coronado Heights Run 15k and 5k in Lindsborg rounds out the races on the
10th. Its been many years since I ran Coronado Heights 15k; but, I would guess
that its about the same. It was a tough course, the Coronado Hill is stuck in
the middle of the race and it would bring even seasoned runners to their knees.
Some runners will be missing on Saturday at Health Strategies at 7:00 am due to
the race above; but, it should still be a decent group. Everyone is welcome to
join the group in the parking lot north of the building at 551 N. Hillside.
The
Sunday Derby Group will meet at 7:30 am at the corner of Madison and Woodlawn in
downtown Derby for a ten miler. All are welcome to join the group.
The Wed Nite
Group meets at First Gear at 6:00 pm for a run through the downtown area and
along the river paths. All are welcome to join the group.
The Thu Nite Group
meets at the Chisholm Creek Park/Nature Center at 5:45 pm for a 5 miler on the
K-96 Path. All are welcome, enter the park from the east side of Oliver between
K-96 and 29th St. and follow the park road to the large parking lot.
Note: for those who run in Chisholm Park, they have installed a
new water fountain that works great. Have some good runs.
